The future of sustaining books of the past

Academic Project, M Des NID, May - August 2020

Matt is an IoT reading accessory that helps you efficiently navigate and complete the books you are reading. Aimed at both habit building and general leisure reading, it is built for providing a tangible environment for the reading ecosystem.
This RFID and IoT based product is designed to create an active presence of the user’s current reads in their physical environment. Unlike most reading accessory apps, Matt is made for minimised dependency on mobile devices.

Dissecting the ecosystem
Motivation & Preliminary research
In the age of short form media consumption, I tasked myself to understand the declining success rate of book reading (physical medium) and propose a solution to the ecosystem. These are three of the anchor points of importance that I initially identified in the problem area:

READING STATE OF MIND
-
CHOOSE TO FOCUS ON OTHER PRIORITIES
-
EMPTY MOTIVATION
-
BACK TO THEIR DAILY REALITY
BUYING STATE OF MIND
-
ASPIRING TO BE YOUR IDEAL SELF
-
INSPIRED
-
ACTIVE & MOTIVATED
PRINT MEDIA IS TIME CONSUMING
Research & Prototype Usability Testing
Conducting research for this project was an extensive exercise in understanding the nuances of media consumption habits with extremely interesting results. The Process roughly followed the given structure:
-
Secondary Research
-
Primary Research (Interviews, phone calls, focused surveys, video calls, group discussions & instagram polls)
-
Problem statement resolution
-
Brainstorming & Ideation
-
Conceptualisation & Design
-
User reviews and revisions
-
Prototyping & testing
